Interview with Michael Egan

Where do you come from/ where did you grow up?

Born and raised in London, Ontario, Canada. I later moved to Windsor, Canada for 5 years and attended the University of Windsor to complete a degree in Human Kinetics and majored in movement science and industrial ergonomics. During this time I gained valuable experience as an ergonomist for DaimlerChrysler and Honda of Canada MFG automotive plants. During this degree I completed an international exchange in Melbourne and decided I wanted to return to Australia again!   This eventually brought me back to beautiful Sydney to study Chiropractic and I have been here since.

What were your interests growing up?

All things sport, travel and adventure. Competed in cross-country, track and field, and enjoyed playing basketball and volleyball. I was the child who would rush to get his math work done quickly so I could be the first out on the play ground.

What got you into the health industry?

Always have enjoyed exercise, sport, health and academics. I had a very positive experience with chiropractic growing up as a child and later in life. I always felt I wanted to do something that would help people, keep me on my feet, but be challenging mentally. Practicing as an Allied Health Practitioner offers this challenge, along with the satisfying reward of improving ones health and optimizing their performance.

How would you define optimal health and lifestyle/what is your philosophy?

I am alligned with the World Health Organization’s definition of health being a state of optimal performance of each the physical, mental and social well-being of an individual. As a Chiropractor and Allied Health Practitioner I strive to identify, educate and improve how one moves, thinks and eats.   Each of these factors has a day to day impact on the neurological connections that fuel and control posture, spinal function and affect our health. Symptoms are a breakdown in function and are signs of stresses from our daily environment being negatively internalized by our nervous system. Chiropractic care delivers a dosage of re-activation of neural connections to the brain that inturn sends messages back to the body to help it normalize and rebalance its control.

What do you try to achieve with your clients/patients?

I provide a functional neurological and neurokinetic assessment of the spine and its supporting musculature and structural components.   I strive to provide restoration of optimal function, education, prevention and maintenance. This is achieved via safe and gentle chiropractic spinal and extremity adjustments, trigenics functional neurology, soft tissue work and postural/rehabilitation exercises. Your health is my priority; therefore when indicated, I work side by side with several Elevate allied health specialists to ensure all your health needs are being achieved.

What do you specialise in/ Focus on?

As a Sports Chiropractor and Trigenics Physician I focus on conditions of the spine and related extremities and their effect on the nervous system. This includes back, neck, shoulder, hip, and knee conditions, headaches, decreased energy and concentration. I have a particular interest in working directly with chronic shoulder pain and dysfunction, athletes, weekend warriors and people wishing to perform at their best.

Trigenics® is a neurokinetic assessment and treatment system which uses interactive applied functional neurology to reset the way the brain communicates with the body. The result can be immediate pain relief with instant increase in strength and movement.  Trigenics is revolutionary in that it combines exercise with treatment as the patients are interactive participants in the process.

What makes you different from other practitioners in your field?

I have studied health and human performance at a university level for 9 years in fields such exercise science, ergonomics and chiropractic and rehabiliation. I have attended several post-graduate courses in chiropractic and sports management and believe in continually upgrading my skills and knowledge.  This knowledge and experience helps me to inquire into the many factors and environment that can be affecting your function and health.   This helps me to understand how I can best provide care, education and appropriate referral.
