Interview with Janet Marshall

Where do you come from/where did you grow up?
I am 5th generation Australian. My family history includes a relative arriving on the first fleet. Sydney born and bred, I started school life on the north shore, and completed High School in the north west of Sydney. For three and half years I travelled and lived overseas, otherwise beautiful Sydney has always been my home.

What were your interests growing up?
I was a sporty kid, tennis was my main game and I played a lot – every weekend at local competition and during the week you could find me practicing, hitting the ball against a wall for hours on end. I also played softball at school.  Music was a passion, starting with the ubiquitous recorder and graduating to the flute.  Food was also of great interest to me, food science especially was a fascination. By the time I was a teenager, I had a burning desire to travel, and after gaining my qualifications as a Pathology Technician, and working four jobs to save the money, that’s exactly what I did.

What got you into the health industry?
My career in health has been long and circuitous - after leaving school I was a Trainee Nurse at the Sydney Children’s Hospital. Following that I qualified as a Pathology Technician, working in hospital laboratories and as a Phlebotomist in a private London Hospital.  A career change then took me into the Australian wine industry and I worked with some cutting edge wineries, in sales and marketing. During this time I became involved in triathlon and my interest in health again came to the fore. I relished the feeling of being fit, healthy and strong, and this sparked my desire to encourage others down the same path. I left the wine industry and studied to become a Naturopath, gaining knowledge about treating health naturally, using herbal and nutritional remedies.  I loved it – it made so much sense to me to take care of my own health, and others, in the most natural way possible.

How would you define optimal health and lifestyle / what is my philosophy?
Optimal health and lifestyle is the ability to work, rest and play with the body, mind and spirit working in harmony, each fulfilling its responsibilities with ease. My philosophy is to employ user-friendly, realistic, sustainable solutions that are compatible with the client’s lifestyle.

What do you try to achieve with your clients / patients?
My aim is to lead my clients to long-lasting robust health, healing the body now for the future. Good health requires a permanent commitment to all aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Making this choice guarantees increased productivity by virtue of greater mental alertness, improved sleep quality and a feeling of well-being.

What makes you different from other practitioners in your field?
I have a wealth of life experience, a strong science background, corporate experience, am approachable, compassionate and offer practical, do-able solutions.  I practice what I preach, being active, healthy and positive.

What are your interests now / married / children?
Spending time with family and friends forms the fabric of a meaningful life and is paramount to me. I enjoy keeping fit with tennis, jogging, swimming and yoga. Being a single Mum with an active, inquisitive teenage daughter keeps me young and challenged! Cooking nutritionally sound food fulfils my creative and nurturing instincts, whilst chilling out with a good book or movie, and listening to music are the relaxing pastimes I enjoy the most.
