Here at Elevate we are spoiled with so many highly skilled practitioners. Emily Boulton Smith is an accomplished Physiotherapist with a diverse skill set. Loving all things sporty, Emily has suffered her fair share of injuries. It was these personal experiences that helped guide Emily into a career in health. Emily has had extensive experience through her roles as Senior Physiotherapist at Sydney’s St Vincent Emergency Dept., Senior Physiotherapist at Gosford Hospital’s ICU and in a number of private practices. Her integrated Physio/Pilates approach is unique and loved by her clients.
Interview with Emily Boulton Smith
Where do you come from/ where did you grow up? Born and grew up in Southampton, Hampshire, UK. Moved to New Zealand in 2001 and then to Australia in 2004. I am now an Australian Permanent Resident, have passed my citizenship test and am waiting to complete my citizenship ceremony.
What were your interests growing up? Netball – played representative level in the UK from the age of 14. I’m from a musical family, so I played lots of instruments. The clarinet was my favorite. I spent all my lunchtimes and after school hours either in sports or music clubs.
What got you into the health industry? All my injuries!!!
How would you define optimal health and lifestyle/what is your philosophy?
Keep active, eat a balanced diet and get some good quality sleep. Laugh every day
What do you try to achieve with your clients/patients?
Accurate diagnosis and realistic goals – return to activities and prevention of re-occurrence.
What do you specialise in/ Focus on?
All Sports (particularly AFL, Netball, ITF TaeKwon-Do, Martial arts), Women’s Health (Pregnancy and exercise, pelvic floor rehabilitation) Pilates, McKenzie Method, rehabilitation of the lumbopelvic complex.

Currently studying Masters in Sports Physiotherapy through La Trobe University, Melbourne

What makes you different from other practitioners in your field?
I approach every client as an individual, I liase with other health care practitioners either within the practice or externally e.g. Sports Doctor to ensure an optimal recovery. I regularly review the relevant recent research to ensure I can help my clients make informed decisions.
What are your interests now/ are you married/ do you have children?
I am currently a black tip in ITF TaeKwon-Do and am training towards my black belt grading in 2010. I love all things sporty!!
