Acupuncture During Pregnancy

Acupuncture During Pregnancy

Given the limited treatments available to pregnant women, acupuncture is a safe and effective option throughout pregnancy in treating issues such as anxiety, nausea, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, fatigue, insomnia, acid reflux, oedema, and much more. It is also commonly used to turn breech babies, and pre-birth acupuncture treatment increases the chance of achieving a natural birth with little intervention, and reducing average labour time.

Turning a breech baby through Acupuncture

The optimal time to turn a breech baby safely and effectively using acupuncture is at 33-34 weeks gestation. Your acupuncturist will give you a treatment and then show you how to use moxa, the burning of a herb, on a specific acupuncture point on your little toe. It may sound a little ‘out there’, but studies have shown that acupuncture improves the chances of turning a breech or malpositioned foetus.

Induction of labour through Acupuncture

If you are past your due date, and/or have a medical induction booked, but would prefer to start labouring naturally, then acupuncture may well be able to help. Studies have shown that pregnant women who have acupuncture in their last few weeks of pregnancy are more likely to start labouring naturally, and experience a reduced average labour time.
